Death of Osama Bin Laden
Who was Bin Laden?
Born in 1957 or 1958, Osama bin Laden was the 17th child of Mohammed bin Laden who was a wealthy business man in Saudi Arabia. Muhammed Qutb radicalized Osama when he was studying business administration at King Abdul Aziz University. As a result, Islam became more than just a religion to Osama. It started influencing him and later became the basis of all his decisions. Consequently, he joined the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and used his father’s wealth to support Afghan rebel forces against Soviet troops in 1979. His resentment for Americans was so great, that he founded Al Qaeda and developed it into an international organization with operations in Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, and Yemen among other countries.
The purpose of killing Osama Bin Laden
Through Al-Qaeda, Osama was involved in many actions that killed many people around the world. For example, in 1993, he armed Somali rebels in Mogadishu who then killed 18 Americans. In 1995, he attempted to assassinate Hosni Mubarek, president of Egypt while also planned the bombing of a U.S owned training center in Saudi Arabia. In 1996, he successfully bombed the Khobar Towers in Dhahran using a truck. The tower was mainly used to shelter American soldiers. In 2000, he killed 17 Americans who were onboard the USS Cole; an American Warship. However, his most terrific actions were the 9/11 attack on the World Trading Center and bombing of U.S embassies in Dar salaam and Nairobi. The latter resulted into the death of 225 people while 4585 were left seriously injured (Lagat, p 163). Through his actions, Osama was a threat to the peace and prosperity of the United States. As a result, he was a public enemy who was to be eliminated one way or the other.
How Osama’s death operation went down
In 2001, the U.S made it a priority to capture or kill Osama. However, as U.S forces invaded Afghanistan, Osama escaped to Pakistan through the Tora Bora Mountain found at the Afghan-Pakistan border. He remained elusive for 9 years, which frustrated the authorities greatly. Nevertheless, his fate was sealed in 2010 when Pakistanis working for the CIA, spotted a white Suzuki that was used by Osama’s most trusted courier. The CIA operatives later tracked the car to a wealthy compound 35 miles from Islamabad. To ascertain the identity of the people living in that compound, the CIA rented a house nearby and monitored the compound for eight months.
