Lamellar Ichthyosis is a genetic condition that affects the skin. Although there are several forms of conditions, it is extremely rare. It is characterized by dry, scaling, and cracked skin. Babies born with the condition have a shiny and waxy skin, which sheds off after approximately two weeks (Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD)). In most cases, the condition is hereditary. Although genetic mutations are passed down a family lineage, it is possible for a baby to be born with the condition despite having no family history. Although these mutations are present during the birth, it is also possible for the symptoms to show later in life.
People with Lamellar Ichthyosis live a normal life. There are so many misinformation and myths about the condition, especially because it is not common (Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types, Inc.). Before the advancements of medicine, infants diagnosed with the condition at birth rarely survived. However, these days, infants survive and lead normal lives, although with small differences.
