Process
Working individually, research your assigned precedent. Search Library Catalog, Avery Index database, books, journals, and the web for information and images. Note your sources for all information and images so you can credit sources properly in your presentation. First describe, then analyze (see below for categories.) Draw diagrams to express your ideas about the design of the building. This is your first diagramming assignment, so give it a try. You may find diagrams online or in a print publication. If so, it is fine to use them, but you must credit a source for any image or idea that is not original work by your team.
You and your teammates can discuss the various aspects of the assigned precedent and learn from each others’ ideas and help each other gain understanding.
Design a PowerPoint to present your case study. Use both images and words to make your key points. Make sure the important information is on the slides and make your verbal presentation concise and brief. Your work will serve as reference material for your classmates. And, it will help everyone learn about how architects and designers use diagrams to analyze and design.
Description - all 3 steps are required
Building information – photo(s) and/or three-dimensional drawing(s) to show overall building form. This slide should include name of building, architecture firm name, date, location, and names of student team members.
Space and Program – plan and section drawings to show space, label spaces or list the types of spaces included in the building (dorm rooms, rest rooms, common spaces including possibly study rooms, kitchens, dining hall, laundry, lobby, recreation rooms, etc.)
Context – location, surrounding buildings

Analysis - select 3 out of the following 7
Concept – what is the unique idea that the design team developed into this building?
Public/private spaces – draw a diagram to show how the spaces of the building are organized into public spaces and private spaces. For example, if the dining hall, lounge, and mail room are all on the ground floor and the dorm rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, then draw a section diagram, with the ground floor labeled Public and the upper floors labeled Private. You can use color to distinguish between Public and Private. Explain briefly in words how public and private spaces are organized in the building.
Site and relationship of indoor spaces to outdoor spaces. Where is the building located? On a city street? In a grassy or wooded area of campus? On a quad? Is there one (or more) outdoor space for the use of residents? Where is the public outdoor space located in relation to the public spaces of the building? Draw a diagram and explain verbally.
Circulation spaces (approach, entrance, lobby, corridors, stairs, ramps, elevators). Draw a diagram showing corridors (horizontal circulation) and stairs + elevators + ramps (vertical circulation). Explain in words how movement is organized in the building. For example, are stairs located at the ends of a long rectangular building?
Form (shape or shapes, geometry, composition, consider relationship of the parts to the whole) – draw a diagram that represents the form of the building in plan. Is it a rectangle? Doughnut? Semicircle? L-shape? Etc. Explain the form briefly in words.
Key design principles, such as symmetry or balance, rhythm, repetition, unity, contrast, etc. Include a photo that shows how the building is designed according to these principles.
Sustainability (systems and features may include daylighting, natural ventilation, green roofs, saving energy, generating energy, recycled materials, water management, etc.)

The Swiss Pavilion
a. Background and Problem Statement
The historically admitted natural resources of the life Sun, Air, and Water are still considered as important as they were centuries ago. Southern Orientation (SO) and Natural Cross Ventilation (NCV) are considered as most of the important factors in the modern civil and architectural designs. The modern architecture and engineers working in this domain; also consider the mentioned one of the most important elements to be considered in their architectural designs. The Swiss Design methodology which was heavily observed post World War 1 era is one of the methodologies was developed to consider to SO and NCV factors in the design of the buildings. Every architectural designer and concerned authorities continuously affirm the importance of sunlight and natural ventilation in the buildings. However, the industrial and technology boom experienced by the world resulted in the ignorance of several natural phenomena’s’ including SO and NCV in the commercial and residential building. Today, most of the architectural designs and building we witness around ourselves have been designed to ignore the natural SO and NCV requirements. Most of the modern buildings have no directional orientation, static in structure, (not responding to the natural changes taking place in the environment surrounding them), and thus vulnerable to several artificial and natural disasters. The concerned is revived while reviewing big apartment complexes which are developed ignoring the basic requirements of a living space. Owing to the importance of the SO and NCV parameters this research is going to focus on the residential buildings owing to their immediate importance and ease of analysis.
The building selected for this analysis is located in the Paris, in University Campus (CIUP) and its multiple buildings. The residential buildings in consists of 37 residences and communal buildings. Standing on this campus is a Swiss Pavilion, an architectural masterpiece and identified as a monumental piece in the history. The decision of making a pavilion in the complex was made in the year 1924 and from the years 1925-1930 and secure a Swiss Government grant. The building was finally inaugurated in the year July 1933. The motivation behind the design of this complex is to transform the Swiss image from folk and outdated culture to a modern industrialized and environmentally friendly country.
b. Analysis
The analysis of the Southern Orientation (SO) reveals the motivation of design and implementation of SO approach is to provide a comfortable and refreshing interior in the environment (Antiniou 110). The peaceful environment is only possible if the residential building has sufficient sunlight and ventilation systems. The sunlight in itself is dynamic in nature as it varies according to weather conditions, the change in the direction of the sun, and finally the change in the spectrum of the source (sun) (Antiniou 110). It is an admitted fact that direct exposure to sunlight which is ultraviolet in nature is necessary for the normal human life.
