Why Introverts Tend to Express Their Feelings Via Social Media Rather Than Their Friends
Anyone who has gone through the Big Five Personality Test or the Myers-Briggs should be familiar with the two terms, introvert and extrovert. They were first coined by Carl Jung, a famous psychologist. Jung stated that one could either be an extrovert or introvert depending on their tendency to interact with their external environment or with their internal thoughts. Thus, from their names, an extrovert is the individual who obtains gratification externally. They communicate a lot with the people around them and enjoy social gatherings or working together in a team with other people. Introverts are however reflective and very reserved. They are deep thinkers who prefer solitude and are afraid of social situations. In most cases, they do not act before thinking and are ever conscious of every action they take. An interesting characteristic of the introverts is that they use a lot of social media and are always online. It makes everyone wonder, why do introverts tend to express their feelings via social media rather than their friends? It is a question that can be answered in many ways.
First, social media allows the introvert to run their own lives without any need to socialize. Too many of them, social media is a blessing (Seidman 403). It allows them to have an excellent social experience without the need to interact with anyone. Most introverts have online platforms like Facebook, Twitter and websites among others which they use to communicate with many people around the globe. They can talk about the current affairs, their feelings, politics, love, business or any other topic that is of interest to them. Social media allows them to be flexible and can update their opinions at whatever time they want. They are not inclined to answer anyone’s question neither are they expected to stay loyal to particular people. They have the freedom of choosing their friends and are at liberty to decline some friendship proposals. They do not have to listen to other people’s problems or tolerate the nagging and annoying attitude of other people. When they feel a person is becoming a nuisance to them, they simply unfriend them and proceed with their lives. No one questions any of their moves or the decisions they make and are not obliged to give any explanation to anyone (Seidman 406). They have full control of their lives as opposed to friends who tend to make life about them.
Social media increases their fear of missing out (FOMO). An introvert must spend some time alone in solitude to replenish his or her mental energy. They do not participate in the social gatherings that their peers are actively involved. However, at some point in their lives, they feel the need to attend such functions even if it is for a minute. Since they do not have time going to the notice boards or talking to friends making inquiries, the social media becomes their only tool. They can easily get updates about their friends, school activities, church activities or any other activity that interests them. It is always annoying to the introverts when they log into their social media sites and find pictures and posts from their friends of a...
