Art Exhibition of Punk Movement
To best fathom the exhibition it is vital to revisit the history and briefly touch the facts that drove the punk culture back in the 1970s. The traces of the punk culture go back deep down in history with some respect, but it rose to fame and became known to masses in the 1970s (Jones 108). The youths around the world, especially the white youth, felt the effects of this ongoing movement on both sides of the Atlantic. It will not be vague and wrong to say that youngsters due to the depravity (joblessness) they were facing wanted an escape from this situation of depression and they found a medium of music and fashion to represent themselves, and they started to form groups of people with similar background or interests.
Two musical bands, Sex Pistols, and Ramones made the world take notice of punk culture in the mid-1970s (O’Connor 72). The fashion, music and sex industries were kind of reinvented in the city of New York. The line between gender representation was very thin, or there was no distinction at all perhaps. Music and sexual orientation were greatly and effectively used to send the message across by the people following and believing in the punk culture.
One can fill pages and pages with the history of this culture but let us just focus on the Punk Lust exhibition and try to present the honest analysis of the selective pictures below.
The above picture is one of the many true representations of the punk culture wave that swirled around the world, especially in America. The picture shows a boy framed in the center with his trousers down to his knees to expose the genitals of a girl. The wording Dead Boys represent a musical band in the mid-70s which was one of the very first rock bands to surface in the advocacy of punk culture. The wording above the picture, All This And More, is a famous song from Dead Boys’ 1977 album Young, Loud and Snotty.
The illustration of this picture with reference to this specific song resonates the culture punk people have believed on from half a century now. The lyrics of the song, All This And More, also has references to the sex as illustrated in the picture. This gives the idea and concept of liberation from the shackles of the system which many youngsters felt that they were having during that phase in time. Below is a small extract of the lyrics of the song just to support the point in the discussion that Dead Boys took a very bold approach in writing the song and how the above picture synchs with it. The entire song has very strong references to sex, some are apparent, and others are hidden.
