Information literacy in a number of skills that an individual can use to find relevant information and use it appropriately under different contexts. The rise of information technology enabled easier access to existing data sources (Ross et al., 2016). Consequently, information literacy enhances the capacity of people to locate, evaluate and effectively use information hence enhancing their capacity to solve problems and make appropriate decisions.
Being information literate empowers individuals with the necessary critical skills required for independence. As a result, individuals can apply new knowledge gained to solve problems that they may encounter (Ross et al., 2016). For instance, decision-making requires critical thinking and analysis skills that assist in complex situations. The ability to use and apply literacy elements such as teamwork, communication and collaboration, enhances interaction with others.
