Introduction
Emotion is an integral component in the workplace – where employees spend most of their time. Normally, every employee operates through his or her thoughts and feelings while at the same time affecting co-workers. In other words, emotions have a significant impact on almost everything an employee does in the work environment. According to Gopinath (2011), emotions are behavioral, physiological, and emotional occurrences experienced towards an individual, event, or object that creates a state of readiness. For example, an employee may develop joy, anger, and other emotional occurrences towards customers, tasks, organizational processes in their workplace. As a result, this affects employee job performance, team spirit, turnover, decision making, and leadership skills (Hwa & Amin, 2016).
Emotions are part of human nature. Usually, humans deal with emotions in every interaction, every day – from home to work to social events. Individual emotions often change depending on many factors such as attitudes, turnover, remuneration, incentives, and awards, to name a few (Hwa & Amin, 2016).
