In context to governments, intelligence refers to collecting vital military or political information between government agencies within a country or other governments. Nowadays, governments share data between their intelligence agencies both to their advantage and disadvantage. This research paper focuses on intelligence sharing between the United States of America and Canada. The government agencies responsible for intelligence sharing in both countries include The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). Advantages of this sharing include: both countries can maximize their security preparedness against attacks, enhance relations between themselves, collect intelligence threats from multiple sources and plan for future intelligence threats based on current global trends. Disadvantages include: untrustworthy intelligence creates dishonesty between collaborating countries, risks using one's information for terroristic purposes, and intelligence information misuse.
Canadian's CSIS is of vital importance to the United States' CIA. Canada aids the United States in more intelligence information about the Commonwealth countries. Even though the United States CIA also shares intelligence with other Commonwealth countries such as the United Kingdom's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI6, Canada being from the same continent, enables the United States to gain any vital information that may threaten this region. As a result, both countries can comprehensively study the attack patterns of any terrorist organization, tactics used, and the procedure these dangerous organizations will use to execute their plans. Once done, the countries devise the best defense techniques to handle the threat. In most cases, when intelligence agencies identify terrorist threats before they occur, intelligence agencies counter these threats in the countries where they are to originate. The threatened country's military does this before the soon-to-be affected country's citizens know the doom that awaits them.
In regards to strengthening bilateral relations, both countries' intelligence agencies meet to discuss complex challenges. Canada is one of the few countries whose people have embraced democracy deeply and respect human rights. Their democracy and respect for human rights make it an essential ally because Canadians are trusted based on their national beliefs and cultural background. Intelligence sharing between both countries enables them to come up with possible solutions to arising problems. After the 9/11 terror attacks, intelligence sharing became an integral part of handling international threats. Intelligence sharing has proved effective. Since the 9/11 terror attacks, there has not been such an incidence in the nations. Additionally, as a result of intelligence sharing, global terrorist Osama Bin Laden was caught by the United States' CIA, collaborating with the military.
