The Last Judgment is an artwork that was started by Michelangelo in 1534 and completed in 1541 for the Sistine Chapel. Fresco is the medium of the painting. As the name of the painting indicates, the artwork seeks to depict the events that shall occur during the final judgment. Jesus is placed at the center of the artwork in the acknowledgment of his position as the judge. The painting is unique due to its comprehensiveness and the disproportionate nature of the human body in the work. That is, the artist seeks to present the event in its entirety but the proportion of the body is flawed.
A close view of the artwork reveals several characters who were essential to the artist's effort to pass his message. Jesus is placed at the center of the fresco as a powerful figure. Virgin Mary is under Jesus’ arm in an acquiescing pose. A group of wingless angels is below Jesus, with the majority of them blowing trumpets and two of them holding books. It seems as if the dead emerge from their graves; with those on Christ’s right going to heaven and those on the left doomed to hell. The objects and characters in the fresco describe the last judgment as shall be delivered by Jesus.
The artwork was painted on the altar wall and the medium can be described as fresco painting. Notable, fresco painting describes a method that uses water-based pigments using the ground dry powder. The pigments are permanently set using plaster on the wall. The medium allowed the painting of 3D human figures using a light hue color and lighting.
