Introduction
Maps are powerful communication tools that elect boundaries that .transcends the barriers of time and space. The discovery of the Mexican Codex map and the North American Buckskin in 1521 and 1774, respectively, is of great historical significance because of the enlightenment, exploration, and exploitation experienced in the world. These maps established a series of cross-cultural and economic achievements which continue to have significant impacts today. In the modern complex world, maps function as a boundary defining land ownership. These maps share similar characteristics. At the same time, certain features of the maps differ significantly. This essay seeks to discuss the differences and similarities.
Similarities
The North American Buckskin was created by the native North Americans residing between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, commonly known as Piankshaw Indians. For decades these indigenous people were vulnerable to the European settlers seeking to expand their territories. After the seven years of war, the six tribes disintegrated, and the Piankshaw became independent. As a result, the Europeans convinced the Piankshaw to sell them lands in exchange for trade goods, leading to the North American Buckskin map to facilitate the land transactions. On the other hand, the Codex map was made during a great cultural tumult to convert native Mexicans to Christianity. The people of Txacala were resistant to the new religion, flawed upon the spiritual manipulation of their rituals. Furthermore, in the early 15th century, German Monks had warned native Americas of catholic practices such as selling indulgences and spiritual credits to gain favor in the kingdom of heaven. His purview reflected a corrupt church as people only gain salvation through divine faith rather than manipulating specific practices to attract them to the doctrine.[Hillerbrand, Hans J., ed. The protestant reformation. Although the North American Buckskin map was not sculptured with symbols and conventions relevant to the Europeans, the maps were inscribed with English words to indicate the collaboration between the native people and the Europeans. Comparably, in the Mexican Codex Map, most of the texts, symbols, lines, and conventions are adapted from the local dialect with the English language.[SzyMAńSKA, K. A. J. A. In terms of functionality, the North American Bucksin and Mexican Codex map was used as a communication tool to exploit and manipulate native Americans to abandon their practices.
