Introduction
Human beings have come up with great works or architecture since antiquity. From the time when knowledge and mathematics began developing and spreading across various societies around the world as it was by then, various marvels of human intelligence have come to the fore. The spread of this knowledge was accelerated even further, by the spread of religion. Islam is perhaps the religion whose impact on architecture is well documented. Started by Muhammad in the 7th century, Islam has had quite a great impact on the societies it has spread to, from marvelous mosques to even houses. The architectural nous has always underlined most of Islam’s great buildings.
The Quba Mosque in Medina and the Mosque of the Companions in the Eritrean city of Massawa are believed to be among the first mosques built in the history of Islam as a religion. Various figures in the Islamic Holy Book of the Quran, such as Suleiman and Abraham or Ibrahim, are credited with the construction of various architectural wonders. Abraham, for example, is believed to have built the Ka’bah in Mecca, which is seen as the first Mosque that ever existed. Islamic architecture is a mix of both religious and secular styles, from the early history of Muslim’s founder fathers where it was influenced by the Romans, Persians and all the cultures conquered or interacted with Islam. The present day has also had technology that has modified the procedure of making architectural designs.
The Alhambra Palace and Fortress Complex
The wide range of Islamic architecture ranges from calligraphy, painting, glass, pottery and textile arts such as embroidery. There are a number of great Islamic architectural structures spread all over the world, for example Khirbat al-Mafjar in Jericho, Palestine, The Lustre bowl with a Coptic priest in Victoria and albert Museum, London, The Baptistere de St. Louis (Louvre Museum, Paris), The Madrasa of Sultan Hasan (Cairo, Egypt) and The Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain. This paper offers an analysis of the The Alhambra Palace and fortress complex and the role played by Islam as a religion in the society before and after its construction.[Washington Irving.(2017). TALES OF THE ALHAMBRA & CHRONICLE OF THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA. Page.1. ,3-10.]
The structure is quite similar in layout, to its Christian counterparts, especially when looking at its castle-like threefold arrangement, as well as the other partitions for the palace and other rooms that are designated for junior staff. The name ‘Alhambra’ means ‘the red’ in Arabic. It derives its name perhaps from the dominant reddish color of the underlying soil that was used to construct the outer walls of the structure. The Alhambra palace was originally constructed as an “alcazaba” Arabic word for ‘fortress’ an “alcázar” Arabic for palace, and a small “medina” which Arabic for city, all in one. In other terms, it was a complex that combined all these structures and functions into one.[Bargebuhr, Frederick P. 2011. The Alhambra: A Cycle of Studies on the Eleventh Century in Moorish Spain. https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110818598. Pages 6&am...
