The purpose of this research project is to give you the opportunity to examine and interpret a building, architectural problem, or theoretical issue in the context of what you have learned in this course through texts, lectures, discussions, and based on your own carefully developed research. Your analysis is expected to situate your chosen topic in its historical context and in relation to larger discussions about architecture like the ones we have been studying in this course. The final deliverable is a conjunction of 3 elements:
1. A critical timeline that graphically registers your research in the form of architectural precedents, thinkers, practitioners, institutions, texts and historical events that will help you situate your topic or object and that will serve as a basis to understand its emergence, the contextual forces that produced it, its localized meaning, and its importance in the historical development of architectural theory and practice.
2. A critical essay that discusses and interprets the object in relation to its historical and theoretical context (details below).

4. This assignment asks you to focus on a specific building, concept, event, publication, or idea in architectural theory and/or practice between the year 2000 and today. As you examine and discuss your topic, you may use texts from the class, but your argument should be based, primarily, on carefully chosen sources that specifically pertain to your case study and that support your claims. In choosing your topic, you are enthusiastically encouraged to investigate areas that complement and balance the narrative of this course (for example, buildings or practices that lie outside the Western canon, or the work of women or minority theorists/architects).
5. The paper should be, in a sense, an application of the process we have been using in the course. In class, instances of critical thinking about architecture (exhibitions, books, journals, theories, concepts) are presented alongside those buildings that were instigated by those ideas or, conversely, buildings and historical conditions are examined as instigators of architectural thought. You are invited to do the same in this project by considering productive intersections between historical events, theories (architectural or otherwise), practices, and design. Depth, however, should always be privileged over breadth, and your writing should offer a concise and nuanced interpretation and a clear argument. Remember, this paper is not intended to be a commentary on the quality or merits of a building or idea; it is not a design critique. Instead, we are asking you to think about the specific object that you are studying in historical terms and to construct an argument about its relation to the multi- layered social, material, and intellectual environment within which your object is situated.

Because students in this course usually have design backgrounds, all papers should be visually designed as articles that reflect the content of the text and the author’s own aesthetic sensibility—and should not be thought of as a generic double-spaced college essay. The analysis should involve primary and secondary sources and the author must use historical evidence to support clearly articulated, cogent, detailed, and informed arguments. Papers must be adequately formatted and annotated using Chicago Style, and must include source information for any images used. IMAGES CAN BE INSERTED WITHIN THE ARTICLE, BUT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN ADDITION TO TEXT’S MINIMUM LENGTH.
8. Authors are also expected to make careful and correct use of grammar and of academic writing conventions.

10. Illustrations (adequately captioned and attributed), properly formatted annotations, and bibliography are required in addition to main text.

Guangzhou Opera House
The Guangzhou opera house takes a twin boulder design that mimic pebbles which have been smoothened by erosion. As such much of the material on the building is granite panels, steel frames and glass. The rough texture of the building on the outside gives the impression of a roughly smoothened pebble, sitting at the banks of a river. The theater which is housed in one of the blocks,has a seat capacity of 1800 within a space that is designed in such a way that it asymmetrical, with gold ribbons and fragmented lights dotting the ceiling(Gzdjy.org 2015). The other block houses the bars, shops, restaurants and other facilities.
The design is articulated in a manner that it can bring out the aspects of the urban relations and at the same time give out the element of cultural traditions. It is the goal of the architects to show the cultural traditions that have shaped Guangzhou as place within the history of southern china and to express the optimism that is going to shape its future. Considering the Guangzhou, was one of the main entrances into china before Hong Kong claimed that title, the building is fitting of the historical significance as it redefines the history, purposeand most of all the significance.
Today the building sets Guangzhou among some of the most crucial cultural centers in the whole of Asia, within the new millennium. It is also a design that aligns with natural landscape as it borrows from the concepts of erosion, topography and geology while at the same time sitting at the delta of the Pearl River. As such, even its settings are design in manner that signifies a lot more than a building as it brings out subtle significance to the Asian culture and more so that of china on the global arena. In light of the level of technology applied, it is a building the embraces the basic elements of technology in the new age, pointing to the level of its significance in the future(OUROUSSOFF 2011). It is a building that can thus be said to set the tone in reference to technology and the level of influence that it has in the general life, especially in the urban settings across the world(Gzdjy.org 2015). However, as mentioned earlier, the building does also speak to the traditionalsettings and the element of nature which is very crucial to the Chinese culture and the larger Asian community. It provides the merger between being in touch with nature and connecting with technology which is the driving force in the world at the moment.
This is a building that speaks of erosion smoothing pebbles in a river, which in this case is the Pearl River that is adjacent. Designed by ZahaHadid, the building is one that represents the current developments that are taking place in the architectural realm, where architects seek out irrational forms in a bid to react to the modernist paradigm relative to the Cartesian geometric shapes and figures. According to Patrik Schumacher one of the directors who works with ZahaHadid architectural firm, this style is referred to as parametricism which is directed at fighting the stylistic pluralism that has been part of the architectural development and norms(Javed 2015). The design articulates the complexities that are currently exhibited in most of the life processes relative to the social institutions across the globe and the element of culture and how they all interact in bid to fit in together in the modern life.
