The Impacts of Global Food Insecurity
The issue of food insecurity has become one of the major areas of concern in the world today. Food insecurity is when a household is unable to obtain and access food consistently (Feeding America, 2022). In the United States (US), approximately thirty-eight million people, including twelve million children, endure food insecurity (Relief Web, 2021).
General Problem Statement
Over the years, food insecurity has escalated, where the increase in 2020 equaled that seen in the previous five years. In 2020, approximately one in every three persons in the world had no or limited access to food, making a direct increase of approximately three hundred and twenty million people in just a year (Relief Web, 2021). Additionally, almost twelve percent of the world’s population were food insecure in 2020 (Feeding America, 2022). The problem was more heavily felt compared to the previous years.
Global food insecurity impacts individuals, society, and various relief organizations. One way it negatively impacts people has to deal with severe health problems. Hunger-stricken people experience difficulty when making a decision on whether to buy food or medicine (Feeding America, 2022). Without good nutrition, children cannot attain their milestones and develop healthily (Pereira & Oliveira, 2020). People also face difficulty deciding whether to invest in household needs such as rent, electricity, or transportation or whether to purchase adequate food.
Adults who are food insecure in society are most likely to get chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and depression (Feeding America, 2022). Additionally, they are likely to portray lower economic and social participation rates. With increased food insecurity worldwide, humanitarian organizations will likely endure pressure and lack due to the increased demand for relief food (Mc Carthy et al., 2018). Organizations are therefore left with the burden of making difficult decisions such as the hunger-stricken areas they should prioritize. Additionally, they are forced to deduce ways of dealing with food insecurity complications such as illnesses such as anemia in severe acute malnutri...
