Social Science Research Assignment: Simple Statistical Survey
Questions
1. Using the survey that you constructed in the Module you need to identify each of the following variables and their appropriate measurement of central tendency. Please make sure to copy/paste the exact question you are referring to into this assignment. (Why is Teenage Depression associated with Substance Use?)
nominal variable and its appropriate measures of central tendency
ordinal variable and its appropriate measures of central tendency
interval/ratio variable and its appropriate measures of central tendency
2. Identify 2 variables in your Workshop survey that you would like to check for a correlation. Keep this simple - this is just an exercise to show that you can identify levels of measurement and picking the right type of correlation.
Name the 2 variables that you want to use
Identify the level of measurement of both variables (my advice is to pick 2 variables that have the same level of measure – like 2 nominal or 2 ordinal)
Identify the appropriate correlation statistic for these levels of measurement:
Lambda - 2 nominal level variables; Gamma - 2 ordinal level variables; Pearson - 2 interval/ratio level variables
3. Differentiate between causation and correlation.
4. Explain the meaning of statistical significance and why it is important.

Question 1
In statistics, a measure of central tendency refers to a summary measure that is useful in describing a whole set of data. It uses a single value which represents the middle or centre of the distribution. There are three measures of central tendency namely the mean, median and mode. First, considering the survey question; being depressed makes you think about using drugs; in this case, depression is nominal variable whose appropriate measure of central tendency is the median. Secondly, from the question; drugs are easily accessible from your home community; here, drugs represent a nominal level variable which measures the mean when the data provided is skewed. Lastly, considering the depression question; how often do you feel depressed; the term ‘how often’ indicates the frequency of taking a substance; it is an ordinal variable whose appropriate measure of central tendency is the mode.
Question 2
In the workshop survey, I would like to check if there is any correlation between age and the level of depression that the person experiences. For this case, the two variables have nominal level of measurement and they show the relative rankings o...
