Assignment 1 meets the following course objectives: 
Apply a sociological perspective to the social world. 
Analyze contemporary social issues using the sociological imagination and use sociological theories and concepts to analyze everyday life. 
Demonstrate the ability to identify, locate, and retrieve information related to the topics in the course. 
Purpose 
The primary goal of this exercise is to apply your developing sociological knowledge and skills to the analysis of a current event. 
Writing Expectations 
This should be 4-6 pages long, double-spaced, 11pt font (arial or times new roman), with 1" margins. 
Instructions: 
Choosing a Current Event. A current event refers to something that is happening in the world at present and they are usually described on the news and in mass media. You must choose a report (written, from the radio, or televised) of an event that has been reported on within 3 months of the assignment deadline. Remember, the event you choose must have some relevance to the study of society, and you must properly cite the source from which you got your report. 
Describe the Current Event. Second, you will need to provide a brief summary of the current event. This should include details such as location, timing (i.e is this an ongoing event, does it appear to be a one time event, is this an example of an event that happens frequently), people involved, and any analysis offered by the report(er). 
Analyzing the Current Event. The final step in the process is conducting an analysis of the current event using knowledge you have gained from the course to-date. The most important thing here is that the analysis should not just be your opinion about the current event, but grounded in sociological theory and prior research. You will need to use at least 4 sociological concepts covered in this course to analyze the current event (i.e. social construction, stratification, social control, crime, deviance). (hint: sociological concepts should be clearly identified, defined and then applied; any paraphrasing or direct quotes used from another source should include APA formatted in-text citations and a full citation at the end of the essay).

Introduction
Sociology plays an immense role in helping us understand the happenings in the society. Sociology is thus essential in understanding how society works and to plan how to deal with various problems associated with it. It also helps in the understanding of how institutions such as family and home, school, religion, government, and the community contributes to the development of individuals. In addition, it provides solutions to problems facing the society such as crime. This paper examines an article in the Huffington Post by Reilly (2017) that offers an insight into the increase murder rates in the US. The information in the article is examined in relation to four sociological concepts.
The Current Event
According to Reilly (2017), there has been a significant increase in murder rates across US cities especially the big ones. Before the FBI releases its final 2016 crime statistics report later this year, it is the prediction of Brennan Center for Justice that the murder rates nationally will hit 5.3 murders per a hundred thousand people (Reilly, 2017). It is also the projection of the center that there will be an increase in violent crime by 6.3%. One distinct feature of the report relates to the cities in the country. About half of the increase in murder rates in US major cities is attributed to only Houston, Baltimore, and Chicago (Reilly, 2017). In addition, in the 30 biggest US cities, there was an increase in murder rates of about 14% from 2015 to 2016. The report also talks about a poll that was conducted by YouGov and Huffington Post in 2016 that found that about two-thirds of Americans believed crime rates had increased over the last decade. As seen, crime and murder, in particular, is a serious problem in the society and the country as a whole.
Analyzing the Current Event
Two forms of deviance according to Little (2014) are sociopathy and psychopathy. The two forms are regarded by the society as problematic because of existing social anxiety in regards to serial killers. In this case, serial killers are taken criminals who live next door or have blended into the society. Little (2014) points out that this happens because we do not know our neighbors well. These two forms of deviance do not have pure genetic or biological explanation.
Deviance According to Little (2014) refers to the violation of the established cultural, social, and contextual norms which can be Mores, Folkways, or Codified laws. Folkways describe norms that relate to everyday customs such as how to greet someone politely or which dress types are appropriate for different circumstances. Mores refers to moral injunctions that have been recognized in the society, for example, the incest taboo. Codified laws are more serious and are enforced by government bodies. Crime, therefore, is deviance given that it breaks social norms as well laws enforced by the government. The increase in murders in the cities across the country goes against social norms in that the society expects life to be respected. In addition, murder is against the law.
