Social Norms: Unwritten Rules, Variance, and the Reasons for Them

Research Paper Instructions:

First, begin this assignment by choosing a folkway to violate. Examples include (and there are many folkways to choose from): wearing the other gender’s clothing, speaking a foreign language to an English speaker, sitting with a stranger at a restaurant, and eating dinner with your hands. Be sure to ask your facilitator if you are unsure if the norm you choose to violate is appropriate for this assignment. Here is an example of a norm violation for you to watch.
Violate your chosen folkway (not a law) in at least one situation and document it with pictures, video, and/or notes. Be sure to note how you feel when you violate the norm, as well as other people’s reactions to the violation. If you do not receive adequate data (reactions) in one situation, try it again in another.
Write an organized essay that explores the norm you violated, how you felt while being deviant, and the reactions you received while you were violating the norm. You should then analyze the experience, including the theories of deviance presented in the text. Your paper should also include an introduction with a thesis and a conclusion that reviews all main points you present.
Assignment alternative: you may choose to do a reflection paper on an instance when you have been deviant in the past. A reflection paper must contain analysis and integrate concepts from the text. Review the grading criteria to ensure that your reflection paper contains all of the necessary components.

Social norms consist of unwritten rules of character that a society or community considers acceptable. Organizations gradually develop norms due to interactions among individuals living together in an organization or community (Rees et al., 2018). The role of social norms in an organization is to provide predictability and order in an organization. Deviance is the act of violating specific predefined standards of a community or society. Instances that involve norms include washing hands before eating, giving people appropriate personal space, maintaining eye contact with someone talking to you, or eating dinner with your hands. However though some norms are constant among communities, each society follows standards that differ from other societies' norms. Norm Violation consists of sociological experiments that analyze people's reactions when encountered with others violating social norms. In this paper, I conducted an investigation where I violate a chosen folkway to explore how I felt breaking the norms and how others reacted to my violation.
Variance in social norms
There exist societies that view certain behaviors as unacceptable (MacInnis et al., 2020). However, the same actions can appear to be morally acceptable in other communities. For example, American society deems shouting when calling a person as inappropriate. However, many African communities deep this behavior as acceptable and fail to criticize anyone who shouts when calling someone. For this experiment, I choose to violate a standard norm for the majority of societies. This norm includes eating foods that people eat with utensils without utensils.
Study's social norm
Apart from being a basic need, food is also a major social component. Food is a significant social content since it involves sharing when individuals eat together, with food acting as a unifying factor. When an individual chooses to eat certain foods that people eat using utensils according to society's norms, the person violates a social norm. This act was the norm that I chose to break as in my experiment.
Reason for the social norm
As I observed, the typical pattern of society involves individuals eating together as a unifying factor. Since individuals are always busy with personal indulges, dinner, dinner, or breakfast act as a significant bonding factor for a group of people, making it a suitable venue to undertake my experiment. Through having meals together, individuals focus on one another, as they always tend to share their personal experiences as a form of bonding. These factors of bonding majorly led to my choice of social norm deviance.
