The human memory is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of psychology that researchers have long sought to understand. For the most part, psychologists have debated about how this mysterious process works as well as what factors are critical to improving this process for practical application. Accordingly, it could be seen that understanding the underlying processes of memory processing, retention, and recall could have significant advantages not only in the academic setting but also in practical applications. Some examples of these benefits would be the development of new systems of teaching or even drugs that enhance memory performance.
In this study, the author would be focusing on an understanding of the impact of levels of processing on memory. Dinsmore and Alexander (2016), defined levels of processing that principle that the encoding process (deepness) of external stimuli affects the way that a person remembers that particular memory.
Previous studies support the fact that visual (i.e., hand movements) and vocal gestures (i.e., rhymes) improve the level of memory processing, which in turn boosts short-term memory retention. For example, one study done by Porter (2016), showed that the use of hand gestures could help in short-term memory processing by improving the encoding process within the mind. However, the author suggested that even if these retrieval cues were helpful in the short term, the same would not be sufficient to boost long-term memory retention. This shows that the use of simple tools of comprehension, like gesture and rhymes, increases memory retention for individuals even for short periods.
Other studies also show that the level of processing needed to ‘recode’ linguistic processes of a particular language differs based on language familiarity. In one study conducted by Macken, Taylor, and Jones (2014), the authors found out that the recoding process of words (from memory to speech) is made more accessible by the individual’s familiarity with the lexicality of the language.
