Born in 1830, Marietta L. Stow did not begin education until the age of nine due to her mother’s ill health and her home’s distance from school (Bennion, 1990). Stow did not hold any government position throughout her life but she was a politician and activist for women’s rights. In 1882, she ran for governor in California and in 1884, she ran for vice president (Schuele, 1995). She also advocated for a congressional bill that sought to give women marital rights in regards to child custody, estate, and property.
While Stow did not begin education till the age of nine, she empowered others, particularly women. According to Schuele (1995), Stow empowered women through education in a system that was arrayed against women. She contributed to the greater good immensely through her activism as she advocated for women rights and roles in American society. It is deducible that she made significant social contributions.
