The Canadian charter is a bill of rights containing essential rights of Canadians. It built on the Canadian bill of rights from 1960, which was a federal statute as opposed to a constitutional document, meaning it could be amended through a simple legislative process. There was a need to safeguard these rights by entrenching them into the supreme law of Canada; the constitution. This was actualized on April 17th, 1982 when it was signed into law by Queen Elizabeth II in Ottawa.
