Determined women have shaped the history of Canada to ensure that all laws and regulations uphold and promote gender equality in the country (Monture, 2008). The first important point of view is equality. For instance, legalizing the property rights of married women was the earliest policy taken in 1884 to promote gender equality in Canada. Second, the 1867 British North America Act was amended in 1929 to ensure that the Defination of the word “persons” also included women. This gave women equal rights of holding a political office (Powell, 2011).
The second point of view is voting. Before 20th century, women were not allowed to vote in the federal and provincial elections (Pederson, 1996). However, reforms were made in 1916 and 1917 which allowed women to participate in provincial elections in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia. The second example is the passage of the War-time Elections Act which saw women in the military given the rights to vote. This became the first step towards ensuring that all minority groups, including Caucasian and aboriginal women, were provided with the rights to vote (Freeman, 1998).
