Various neighborhoods and testing in schools have varied effects on student entrance at schools. Disparities experienced in societal setups significantly influence students' health and well-being, which further influences students' performance. The cultural, economic, and social characteristics of a neighborhood affect students' performance in various ways (Rothstein, 2015). The level of infrastructure development of a community reflects the standards of education within a community. Furthermore, the methods of testing used to admit students to schools might influence the entrance. Methods based on grades and state test scores might be biased based on the diversities in education systems and quality. However, socioeconomic factors affect the performances of the students. Children from low social classes face several challenges that negatively affect their grades and test scores. The paper focuses on race and socioeconomic structures to determine neighborhoods' influence on student entrance to schools.
Low educational achievements among minority students could be a result of unequal access to essential resources. These resources include skilled teachers and a quality curriculum. These differences among students lead to unequal opportunities during admissions. Students from underprivileged neighborhoods with social and economic disadvantages are usually depressed (Rothstein, 2015). These also, students lack adequate parental care, support, and family resources. Most students who lack a significant family foundation experience slow cognitive development, which affects their performance in school (Alloway, 2014). Moreover, these students develop more health issues due to limited access to routine checkups and preventive health care, which leads to frequent absenteeism. These factors are constraints that limit their scope of learning. Furthermore, these students also experience mental issues that lead to their lack of concentration. Again, children from underprivileged neighborhoods may lose focus and drop out of school due to depression. These children study under harsh conditions characterized by crime and violence. Lower social class students are also less exposed to specific fundamental skills. These students have limited exposure to mainstream societies and hence lack knowledge of standard English. Moreover, illiterate parents can not provide sufficient guidance in early childhood learning; thus, they cannot understand complex concepts in school.
On the other hand, students from privileged communities access quality education due to infrastructure development in their neighborhoods. These students also benefit from adequate resources for learning due to funding channeled to their communities. Moreover, these students have a proper educational foundation due to exposure and family resources. Learning in wealthy communities is based on the quality of teaching and learning resources. Children raised in these neighborhoods have access to family resources, which contributes to their skill development.
