Cyber Security in Homeland Security
Electricity generating facilities, water supply, transport, oil and gas distribution, agriculture, finances among many others are all critical infrastructure assets. Destruction of these resources can cause loss of revenue, lives or disruption in the United States economy. Destruction can either be physical or through the internet. However, the internet that seems to overtake the physical handling of resources is accompanied by security problems. One of them being cyber threats. The critical infrastructure faces threats like cybercrimes when systems are hacked. Cybersecurity intends to prevent any unauthorized access to the government network, systems or information that can lead to this destruction. Here is an exploration of the relationship between cyber-security and national critical infrastructure protection.
Signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2018, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Act creates the capacity to defend all kinds of attacks related to cybersecurity. The agency works together with the federal government in the provision of tools to fight these crimes. The homeland security department uses a risk-informed approach in its effort to safeguard the critical resources in cyberspace (Baggett & Simpkins 2018). The department emphasizes the transparent secured-access process of critical infrastructure. It also advocates for civil liberties and privacy protection. To strengthen its efforts, the department collaborates with both domestic and international professionals to provide a collective action.
