Final Research Paper

The final paper will be a mixed research paper based on the research you have done for the course. It should have at least 5-6 pages of text, 3 tables, and 3 graphs. You may need to change variables from Assignment 2 or look up new research articles from Assignment 1, to better sync up with your interview data. Please address all the following items below in the research paper:
Introduction
• Use an opener that is interesting and informative, which gives the reader a good sense of the research topic right away.
• State your research question. What social science question do you want to answer with your research?
• State your thesis/main argument of the paper. What did you find in your research?
• Discuss the importance of your research. Who is affected by the social phenomenon you study, and why is it important to have an answer to your research question?
Literature review
• What past research has been done on your research topic?
o Summarize article one in a paragraph.
o Summarize article two in a paragraph.
• How does your research hope to build on this past research?
• Define any theoretical concepts and explain any theories that relate to your topic.
Methodology
• Discuss the methods used in your research
• What type of research did you conduct?
o Quantitative
o Qualitative: how did you conduct your interview?
• What kinds of measurements did you gather?
o Quantitative: report the exact survey questions from the codebook here.
 Make a hypothesis about the relationship between your two variables
o Qualitative: what were the general kinds of the interview questions you asked?
• When/where was your research conducted?
Findings (Quantitative)
• Dependent variable (Y)
o Present the frequency table and graph of the distribution of Y
o Discuss the distribution of Y individually (use percentages or rounded figures)
• Independent variable (X)
o Present the frequency table and graph of the distribution of X
o Discuss the distribution of X individually (use percentages or rounded figures)
• Relationship between X and Y
o Present the contingency table and graph of the relationship between X and Y
o Analyze the relationship between X and Y (compare percentages across rows)
o Is the relationship significant? (discuss p-value)
Findings (Qualitative)
• Discuss and explain what themes you found in your research
o What is the underlying meaning behind the data? What did you learn about each theme from the interview? Discuss in detail.
o Ensure that an outsider who has not done this research can understand your findings as well as you do—discuss important context if necessary
o Provide quotes from the interview that illustrate these themes
Discussion
• Quantitative:
o Was your hypothesis supported or not from your analysis?
o How do you know?
• Qualitative
o How do your findings answer your research question?
o What have we learned from the research?
Conclusion
• Summarize your main findings and evidence from your research. What have you learned about the social phenomenon? What answer can you provide to your research question?
• Discuss how future research could build upon your work. What questions should we research more in the future?

• Make sure to include full citations for any studies and research articles referenced in your outline.

Findings: General Social Survey
This is the quantitative findings section. You can include the tables and graphs here where you discuss them, or you can put them at the end of the paper and just include text here. Both are acceptable research paper formats. You generally have 3 total paragraphs discussing each table in turn. Some will be longer or shorter depending on how many categories your variables have.
Findings: Qualitative Interview
This is the qualitative findings section. It should be one to two pages in length, discussing the interview findings in detail.
Discussion

Works Cited
Include your citations here. They have a different format than other paragraphs where the first line of a citation is not indented, but the other lines are.
