Attachment style is important and helps in explaining the development of individuals. Attachment styles influence different aspects, such as the emotional, social, and impacts of an individual's psychological well-being. Attachment style starts from infancy, and therefore, the attachment style that an individual will get in early childhood is a pillar direction regarding how these individuals will develop relationships in the future; further, it also expresses how members will navigate through the social world in their lives. Attachment styles include secure attachment, insecure/avoidant attachment, insecure, anxious attachment, and disorganized attachment.
Types of Attachment Styles
The secure attachment style is where individuals get secure support from caregivers. The role of the caregivers is to ensure that individuals get constant and immediate responses to their needs. Also, a secure environment is provided so that these individuals can explore different developments. In secure attachment, the advantage is that individuals start feeling confident and develop high self-esteem because they know they will get the needed support and guidance in the right direction (Lyons-Ruth et al., 1990). In a secure attachment, individuals are comfortable with both intimacy and independence. Secure attachment is important in relationships because it allows for deep connections that grow relationships. Furthermore, partners can express their emotions openly, building trust in one another easily. Secure attachment allows individuals to exhibit better emotional control and regulation and, hence, better coping skills.
The second one is the insecure-avoidant attachment, which highlights that individuals who get this attachment experience less responsiveness and support from their caregivers. Since these individuals are not supported accordingly, they develop defensive self-reliance, which helps them survive and develop their identity. The challenge that the individuals might face is they will start to downplay any importance in developing relationships, they will highly avoid emotional vulnerability, and when it comes to intimacy, they will struggle to maintain proper intimacy (Lyons-Ruth et al., 1990).
