This assignment serves as a building block for your final thesis proposal. For this literature review, you need to select a substantive theory, either something that we discussed in the lesson, or something outside of the course, and focus your literature review around that theory. Your theory selection should make sense with the research question you intend to assess within your final research proposal. Since this is a literature review focused on a particular topic ( ie.a substantive theory ) you will need to discuss the current state of the literature specific to that theory ( for example, deterrence theory, social identify theory, and etc ). You’ll want to start with a discussion on the early conceptualizations of the theory and how it has developed overtime. Your conclusion should include a discussion on where the research on that theory needs to go next. What are some questions that remain? What new ways should it be applied?
Format: Standard academic format will suffice: 1-inch borders on all four sides, double spaced, with times new roman 12-point font. As with all academic assignments ( Unless otherwise specified ) you must include a references section and list your references.

Whistleblowing is the disclosure by organization members (former or current) of illegal, immoral, or illegitimate practices under the control of their employers to persons or organizations that may be able to effect action. It is the disclosure of in-group malpractices to an external agency for legal and moral actions (Butler, Serra, & Spagnolo, 2020). Whistleblowing can be considered as the ultimate act of justice, aiming at rectifying an irregularity, but it can be the ultimate breach and betrayal from a different perspective (Jalan, 2020). It, thus, present an ethical ambiguity that prompts questions about the motivation behind blowing the whistle in the first place. Previous studies suggest that the motivating factors behind whistleblowing can be categorized into three major groups: individual characteristics of the whistleblower, contextual factors, and the nature of the wrongdoing.
Individual whistleblower characteristics that influence the intention to expose wrongdoings in an organization include demographic attributes (age, gender, organizational tenure) and other personality characteristics such as the personal cost of reporting, the responsibility to report, and organizational commitment, and job performance (Butler, Serra, & Spagnolo, 2020). Contextual factors are the aspects within an organization that influence the urge to blow the whistle, and they include organizational support as well as the size, structure, and culture of an organization. The intention of a whistleblower may be triggered or influenced by the nature of the irregularity of concern considering its severity or seriousness in terms of safety and health risks or its financial consequences (Dungan, Young, & Waytz, 2019). A significant proportion of past studies largely focus on the characteristics and motivations of individuals as the antecedents of whistleblowing even though whistleblowing decisions appear to be linked to group membership and associated processes. It, therefore, calls for the evaluation of group memberships and related processes as motivators in whistleblowing using the social identity perspective.
Social Identity Theory
The social identity theory is a profound social-psychological theory on intergroup and social relations. It is among Henri Tajfel's greatest contribution to psychology (Hogg, 2016). The theory explains how individuals obtain some sense of identity from the groups they perceive that they belong to. It, thus, focuses on the role of groups rather than the individual and suggest that social contexts and group associations have a significant impact on individuals. They derive their identity (social) from the group membership. The social identities and the level of identification determine the attitudes and behavior of individuals toward other people, groups, organizations, and society (Brown & Capozza, 2016). The social identity theory has been successfully applied in organizational organizations and can be used to address whistleblowing from a perspective where a group has participated in wrongdoing or is suspected of having done so.
