1 Activities of a typical “play day” and difference from athletic competition
Typically, play days served as an alternative to intercollegiate competition as a sports model during the 1920s and were largely promoted by women’s physical educators (Ellner, 2020). These activities encouraged the participation of girls in sports and marked special events where girls engaged in sports and different games in teams from various schools. It was the women’s physical educators’ view during the time that this model would prevent abuses in women’s sports, which was common in men’s athletics while maintaining acceptable standards of class and gender behavior. In English Standard Version, 1 Peter 3:7, the Bible teaches that women are “weaker” implying the difference in their physical makeup from men, so they should be treated the same in sports participation. This division was in line with scriptural teachings that define men and women to work together while ensuring the fulfillment of distinct roles for the good of glorifying God. The play days were advocated and marketed by women’s leadership as the right way for women to participate in sports. However, while this model gained popularity and embrace among schools and colleges, it never saw adoption in other sports settings. One distinguishing feature of play days from modern sports is that winning was not prioritized as a determinant of success, but rather the social activities that girls engaged in. Play day also differed from the athletic competition with the latter focusing on winning. This model of athletic competition became commonplace by the 1960s with social forces eroding the boundaries between play day and competitive models (Ellner, 2020). During this time, women physical educators started to reevaluate ways of encouraging the desired way of competing akin to that observed in athletics. This became a turning point from play days to the modern developments observed in women’s sports today (Ellner, 2020). Setting itself aside from the athletic competition, the play days model ensured women participate in social activities while protecting them from abuses common in men’s athletics.

While women activists, including Alice Milliat, are credited for the early efforts to foster gender equality in sports, Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias later pushed the boundaries for women participation in sports (de Soysa & Zipp, 2019). Didrikson thrived a difficult moment for women in sports as she struggled to find competitions to participate in during her first part of gold career after losing her amateur status. Although she did not understand why she lost her chance to play, she never lost hope and had to wait for three years to gain back her status.
