Research Paper Instructions:

Description: The final synthesis paper consists of a text in which the student gives an overview of a topic of their choosing (an area of study, a contemporary event, a book, a social problem, a scientific debate) by gathering, combining and integrating different specialized sources on the subject, and adding their opinion/conclusion based on their research.
This paper should be no shorter than three pages and no longer than seven pages, including works cited, double space, 12pt font.
Margins: you can use the default margins, that is, 1 inch on each side of the page.
Make sure you synthesis paper has a title and page numbers .
citation style: MLA / APA
Grading Rubric:
(This Rubric is adapted from the Checklist for Synthesis writing provided by our coursebook Academic Writing for Multilingual Students (2019) by Qian Du, available on our Canvas files page.)
FINAL SYNTHESIS PAPER - (max 25 points)
1) Academic Synthesis Writing - Content - up to 12 points
Your synthesis writing demonstrates your knowledge about the topic(s)/issue(s) and your ability to make connections between texts and multiple perspectives. You have enough sources to support your claims.
Your synthesis paper clearly shows your stances, perspectives, and thinking about the source information that you have read on the focal topic(s)/issue(s).
You have provided sufficient background knowledge for your audience to understand the importance of discussing the topic(s)/issue(s) as well as your intent of writing the paper.
You have included a number of relevant and important pieces of information from the different sources to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing discussion on the topic(s)/issue(s).
You have satisfactorily incorporated the feedback you received from your classmates and your instructor when/where relevant.
2) Academic Synthesis Writing - Organization - up to 7 points
The introduction of your synthesis writing clearly describes the focal topic(s)/issue(s) to be discussed in the body part of your writing.
You have made purposeful decisions for the organization of your synthesis paper and the order of your paragraphs is based on your understanding of the audience and what they would like to get from your writing.
In your conclusion, you restate your thesis, you reiterate some of your main points and of your insights informed by your research, and you leave the reader with something to reflect on, or with a call for action, or with questions/a direction for future research in this subject/topic.
3) Academic Synthesis Writing - Language and Formatting Style - up to 6 points
You are not summarizing each source separately.
You have clearly differentiated between information from different source texts and your own analysis and explanations through appropriate and effective signaling phrases and in-text citations (direct quotes, paraphrases, etc). The reader should be able to easily tell which information is taken from which source text(s) and which is your own analysis.
You have chosen a formatting (citation) style and used it consistently throughout your paper.
You have consistently used language that is appropriate to an academic synthesis writing text (as studied in class and as shown in examples provided by the instructor).

The Impact of Autonomous Driving Technology
Automated vehicles (AVs) with self-driving systems are becoming commonplace worldwide, particularly in developed countries. Their continued adoption has triggered a heated discourse about their safety and the mechanism of controlling autonomous driving technology (ADS) for everyday use. Further attention is shifting towards how these technologies will affect emerging transportation networks, the social environment, economic basis, ecological systems, and biodiversity (Bissell et al., 2018). Many researchers have floated questions about whether stakeholders should entirely automate such systems or leave them under strict control of direct human supervision. However, players in the sector expect the technology to lead to a paradigm change in transportation systems regarding user experience, mode options, and economic models. Thus, assessing the positive and negative implications of autonomous driving systems on an economic, social, and environmental lens is fundamental to determine whether ADS requires a comprehensive adoption or revised gradual application.
The social effects of autonomous vehicles rely on how ADS revolutionizes society and the associated changes due to technology. For instance, the safety of autonomous cars remains understated. Evidence indicates that an estimated 1.3 million people lose their lives or have life-changing injuries on the roads worldwide. Moreover, WHO (2021) blames human mistakes and misjudgments for the vast majority, around 90%, of road accidents. WHO further indicates that a significant proportion of these accidents link to alcohol consumption, overspeeding, and driver-based distractions (2021). However, autonomous cars eliminate these vulnerabilities, leading to fewer accidents due to ADS. Evidence indicates that autonomous vehicles can save approximately 1 million lives per year in this context because self-driving systems minimize human-based errors (Bissell et al., 2018). These changes demonstrate the unmatched opportunities that the ADS present in the transportation sector.
ADS has significantly improved convenience and flexibility. Although conventional driving is enjoyable for many indivi...
