The many protocols set by the government are meant to protect citizens and ensure safety at all times. After the September 9/11 attack, security priority shifted towards airports. The transportation security agency (TSA) has intensified security within airports, applying a multi-layered approach. These security measures have raised concerns, with many people questioning if these methods are meant to keep people safe because they violate people's liberties. TSA measures are considered to be intrusive because they invade individual privacy; they are humiliating and are a health risk to passengers.
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after the deadly September 9/11 attacks to tighten security, especially within the aviation industry. The Homeland Security Act mandated the TSA to provide a comprehensive security screening of all passengers, including properties carried in air carrier aircraft. Although passenger safety has become the top priority when dealing with airport security, a growing number of passengers have expressed distress because of the measures used by the TSA (Hoff, 2014).
Implementing risk-based security check has proved to be challenging, advanced technologies, including whole body images and other advanced x-ray devices, improve detection of any threat object like non-metal weapons and even explosives. However, many people have questioned the manner in which TSA has carried out routine security checks and screening at airports. People are concerned about how TSA can keep people safe without necessarily violating their liberties.
In the aftermath of September 9/11 attacks, the homeland security Act 2002 expanded security giving the responsibility for civil aviation security to TSA (Hoff, 2014). Airport scanners at security checkpoints are operated by the TSA officers who use a multilayer approach including advanced imaging technology scanners. TSA implemented additional full-body scanner including a millimeter wave scanner to search for hidden weapons or any hidden devices (Abini, 2014).
Other measures, including pre-screening passengers by comparing passengers name submitted by the airlines to the national security watch list. The TSA also uses pat-downs as an alternative measure to enhance security (Abini, 2014). Security measures implemented by the TSA especially the full body scanner and enhanced pat-downs have been criticized by passengers because these measures invades their privacy (Hoff, 2014). Pat-downs are used especially when the metal detector sets off or when the imaging detects something suspicious or when passengers do not want to undergo any electronic screening methods (Hoff, 2014).
