How Social, Cultural and Political Context Influence Literature
Literature is one of the ways through which people can express their live. In most cases literary texts convey different messages to the reader about the life of the author. It can also communicate the social-economic environment when the literary text was written. In this essay, I will review the literary works of Lorraine Hansberry, A Raisin in the Sun and The Metamorphosis by Kafka Franz. The essay will evaluate the literary works of the authors in relation to their personal life and the environment under which their work was written so as to evaluate the way in which literature is influenced by different factors.
Lorraine Hansberry was an African American who was born and raised in Chicago. In her book, A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry writes about a struggling black family in Chicago which happens to be his place of birth. The black family struggles to move away from segregation that was affecting the young black families in America at the time. Hansberry was influenced by his father in writing about segregation since her father was also a crusader who campaigned against segregation that was affecting the Americans. Through the black family we see how race and money is a challenge to most of the people who want to escape poverty. In 1938, Hansberry and her family moved to a White neighborhood where they were violently attacked by their neighborsCITATION Hil111 \p 45 \l 1033 (Hill 45). They refused to move from their home after attack from neighbors until they received a court order and the case made it to the Supreme where it the restrictive covenants were ruled as illegal.
