Friendship is one of the key aspects of life that keep people united. When friendship does not exist among people, the void is replaced by hostility and fear. These aspects can make people live an uncomfortable life, especially if friendship is absent between the masses and the government. When people engage in friendships, it becomes challenging for them to hurt those they love. However, in the absence of friendships, hatred becomes the leading factor of inhuman acts. The Dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell outlines Winston Smith's story and how he attempts to rebel against his totalitarian government. There exists no friendship between the masses and the government. The novel is a warning to societies to prevent them from accepting totalitarian governments. I believe that friendship is an unnecessary thing because it has no value to the state.
Orwell uses the Party's idea to show the kind of rules that the government has set to deprive the ability to enjoy friendships. The party believes that sexual desires compete with people's ability to show loyalty to the state. Winston considers the ideologies of the party as a way of subjecting people to dehumanizing living conditions. He points out that the state has made life unbearable, and at some point, life was supposed to better. The narrator also talks of an ancient time when life was better. He states, "the ancient time, to a time when there were still privacy, love, and friendship" (Orwell, 1995, p.30). This indicates that the state has taken love, friendships, and privacy away from its citizens. Winston dreams of a golden country where he is free, and the country does not have a restraining government. He considers the Big Brother era an intolerable living condition and wishes to live in a world where the current rules do not exist. The dream is an indication that Winston has thoughts of a different life rather than what he is living now. "dreams have significance" (Freud, 1999, p.8). In most cases, people dream about the thought of their subconscious mind. Winston's dream shows the thoughts he has been having due to the intolerable society he lives in. Winston's dream shows the negative impact of a totalitarian government in society. People wish to live in a free society where the government does not interfere with their basic ways of life. For instance, friendships are among the most important aspects of people's life's and forbidding them is considered inhuman.
Winston's love relationships indicate how unnecessary love is to the state. Winston's relationship with Julia further clarifies that friendship is no important to the state. Sexual desire is considered as an act that competes with people's loyalty to the state. Julia states, "when you make love, you are using up energy and afterward you feel happy.
