Blade Runner Vs Do Androids Dream of Electric sheep?
Blade Runner is a film released in 1982 by Ridley Scott and written by David Peoples and Hampton Fancher. The film is an adaptation of a book authored by Phillip K Dick in 1968 titled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Both the literary pieces are similar but they have their plot differences which make them to seemingly appear to have different purposes. Though the film is structured to entertain, it leaves or adds details not in the book. The story of the two literary pieces are strikingly similar and since their objectives are irreconcilable, the director and author of the film and book respectively narrate the develop the plots differently. Nonetheless, the book is more interesting and gives a more detailed post war portrayal of the world than the film.
The film is pegged on the book but has different characters and more details which are not in the book. To make the story more interesting, the film director set the plot in Los Angeles unlike the nearly deserted San Francisco setting used in the book. The differences in setting hint on the differences the two literary pieces have. As their plots develop, the main objectives sought by the director and author become more differentiated. First of all, the portrayal of Isidore in the film is fairly inconsistent with the book version of a similar character. Sebastian is depicted as an inventor genius unlike the sub-par IQ Isidore in the book. Isidore plays a critical role in the book and introduction of Sebastian sets the plot on a new course. Sebastian is entirely a new character who cannot be directly mapped into any character in the book.
The film also skips the inclusion of Mercerism. A new cultish religion that balances the emotions of its followers. Mercerism plays an important part of the book and helps build the plot around humanity and the role of emotions in our lives. Dropping of this key element of the original story changes the plot entirely.
