Nicolaus Copernicus Life Sciences Research Paper Essay

Research Paper Instructions:

Students will write a research paper on a famous astronomer who made a significant contribution to our knowledge of astronomy. Students will research the life of the astronomer, their discoveries, and their impact on the scientific community and society then and now. If the information is available, also comment on their religious beliefs and how this may have impacted their study of astronomy.
Students will write a 500 word essay outlining major discoveries and describing the instruments used to make the discovery. Also, students will discuss the time and culture that the astronomer lived in and how that affected their contribution to science. Each paper must also include a minimum of two pictures with captions and citations: preferably one of the astronomer and one of their discovery.
Papers must be written in APA format (no abstract necessary) and include a title page and a works cited page. For the paper, if you include an abstract and key words list in APA format, you can receive up to 2 points of extra credit.
This research paper should be in your own words. If there is something that is almost impossible to put into your own words, like the statement of a complex theory, you can directly quote it, but you should not have more than TWO quoted sentences in your entire paper!
Also, please be sure to have at least TWO reputable sources for your research.

Several astronomers have presented various discoveries on astronomy that have changed our views and thoughts about the universe. Nicolaus Copernicus is among the astronomers whose perspectives have shaped our understanding of astronomy. He was born on 19th February 1473 in Poland and was well-known for heliocentrism among other discoveries. Copernicus is significant because he was identified as the first astronomer to bring forth a detailed heliocentric version of the solar system. After making significant contribution in astronomy, he died on 24th May 1543, but his contributions remain relevant for thousands of years to come.
Copernicus discovered that the sun rests at the center of the universe and that the Earth rotates around its axis per day. He further established that the earth revolves around the sun once each year. This is what was referred to as the heliocentric system. The theory also opines that prolonged variations in the direction of the named axis are responsible for the precession of the equinoxes (Rabin 2004). Copernicus’ book on the revolutions of the celestial spheres projected an idea that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around was highly against the teachings of the church. Interesting to note, Copernicus’ concept was born at such a time when the church took control of most societal activities. The catholic church, at that time, was mighty as it taught that the Earth was the center of the universe.
