Answer two of the below essay questions, one from Section A and one from Section B. Please observe thefollowing guidelines:

• Your exam is due no later than Thursday, March 19th, at 10:00am. We will not grade late exams. It isyour responsibility to ensure that you have reliable internet access. We strongly encourageyou to submit your exam well in advance of the deadline.
• Each essay should be no fewer than 400 words and no more than 500 words in length.
• You may consult only the course readings, Canvas content, lecture slides, and your notes. Do notconsult outside sources or the internet.
• You may not collaborate with other students on the exam. Your work must be solely yourown.

Section A: Answer one and only one of the following questions (50pts)
A1. Write an essay on the differences between supranationalism and intergovernmentalism. (1) How dothese concepts relate to state sovereignty in general, and how do they apply to the United Nations (UN) andthe European Union (EU) in particular? (2) How do the different political institutions of the EU restrictthe sovereignty of member states? Why do EU member states agree to these restrictions? (3) Regarding theUN, discuss a real-world example of the interests of a member state conflicting with the interests of the UNSecurity Council. What happens when the UNSC and member states disagree?
A2. Write an essay on civil war. (1) What are the key differences between civil and interstate wars, andwhy have civil wars attracted so much attention in recent years? (2) Which approach does a better job ofexplaining the causes of civil wars: the greed vs. grievances framework, or bargaining models? Why? (3)Apply the bargaining model to the either the Syria or Iraq civil war, and explain the model’s strengths andweaknesses. How well does the bargaining model help us understand why this war happened?

B1. Write an essay on the politics of intermational trade. (1) How do we determine comparative advantage,and how does this concept differ from absolute advantage? B2. Write an essay on monetary relations. (1) How do exchange rates affect the value of investments, bothin direct investment and portfolio investment? That is, when do investors prefer a weak currency to a strongcurrency, and vice versa? (2) How is international trade affected by exchange rates? With respect to trade inthe United States, explain who benefits from a weak currency and who suffers. (3) How are exchange ratesconnected to export-led growth strategies? With reference to China, explain some of the potential negativeconsequences of using a weak currency to boost exports

Civil and interstate wars are concepts that differ in terms of their causes, courses, and impacts. A civil war is a conflict that involves a state and a single or several non-state groups but within a state's boundaries. In this sense, civil war entail conflicts between a state and organized fighters (groups) or conflict between two or more non-state groups but within a state’s territory. Interstate war is a conflict that involves a state against another state(s). In recent years, civil wars have attracted much attention due to several factors. One of the reasons is that civil wars are common and prevalent worldwide including Asia, Africa, and even Europe. In addition, civil wars get much attention as they tend to last for a longer duration before ending. Furthermore, most civil wars, such as the Syria War, have impacts on powerful nations like the U.S. and its citizens, thus tend to gain much attention. Most civil wars have devastating effects such as death and hunger on millions of innocent victims like women and children.
One of the approaches that explain the cause of civil war is the "greed versus grievance" approach, which is based on two main arguments. One, it states that greed is a motivation to engage in civil war due to a desire to better a situation (rewards engaging in war are better than not joining) or desire to gain economically. Grievance is the concept that people engage in war to represent their identity, either ethnicity, religion, or social class, among others. On the other hand, bargaining models is an approach that states that civil war can mainly be attributed to political reasons rather than economic or social actions. As a result, the warring factions use war as a bargaining disagreement where one actor will not only gain in the event the other side suffers a loss. The "greed versus grievance" approach provides a better explanation because most civil wars are caused by greed or desire to protect one's identity like religion.
The Syria War is a civil war cause can be explained by the bargaining model approach. The war emerged from the 2011 Arab world uprisings to protests against corrupt ruling regimes. Although most leaders were ousted, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad turned to violent crackdowns to disperse protestors.
