Introduction
There are numerous factors that make the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in correctional facilities quite difficult, particularly when it comes to budgetary issues as well as administration of medication to prisoners. Studies have revealed that there is a higher prevalence of HIV in prisons in comparison to the general public(Johnson, Kondo & Eldridge, 2015, 108). Nevertheless, resources that are used to prevent and manage the treatment of HIV in prisons are limited, and this signifies the importance of analyzing prevention programs in correctional facilities. In addition, administration of HIV drugs to inmates is faced with several challenges since most individuals fail to follow a routine treatment guideline and there is lack of nutritional diet in these environments. This paper critically analyzes the treatment of HIV in correctional facilities, including the challenges associated with budgetary issues and administration of HIV drugs to inmates.
Challenges with Administration of Medication
Prisoners are the most marginalized individuals in the society and they are exposed to a disproportionate burden of infections, especially HIV. One of the leading challenges that prisoners face is proper and timely administration of medications. Improved antiretroviral therapy has led to successful treatment of HIV in prisons and reduced death rate as a result of HIV-AIDS. However, Wakeman and Rich (2010, 3) say that although it is possible to treat HIV successfully, administration of drugs is faced with a subset of unique challenges. The main problem is associated with interruption of therapy which is a major dilemma among prisoners with HIV. Studies have revealed that on most occasions, medications are not procedurally continued during incarceration, especially when antiretroviral (ARVs) are inaccessibleon site.
The Department of Corrections in Rhode Island connects with pharmacies that are out of the state to ship medications to the prison overnight. However, such an arrangement leads to a 24 hour period of therapy interruption. Another important issue that leads to interruption of medication is frequent transfer of prisoners from one correctional facility to another(Wakeman & Rich, 2010, 4). In addition, interruption of treatment procedure occurs as a result of frequent court approaches as well as punitive detention conditions during segregation. This implies that most prisoners are unable to follow the treatment regimen based on the prescribed conditions of ART therapy.
Another challenge related to administration of ARVs is the issue of confidentiality.
