Abstract
The research aims at the importance and working of neighborhood and community crime prevention techniques and how communities should carry them out successfully. It is beneficial in building trust between police and citizens. Community policing can help to improve communication between police and the community. This communication is important because it allows police to know about crime in the community and respond efficiently when crimes occur. In addition, it creates a sense of identity among citizens, which may help reduce crime rates by creating a sense of stability in the area. Without trust, such crime prevention techniques fail. However, the strong collaboration would lead to a strong bond against crime in the neighborhood. The future of community crime prevention is uncertain because the issues need to be addressed efficiently for the plan's success.
Neighborhood/ Community Crime Prevention. Does it Work? Why or Why Not?
Introduction
Research Background
Crime prevention is an important part of any community, and there are various ways to achieve it. One way to help prevent crime is through neighborhood or community crime prevention programs. These programs can offer various benefits to residents and communities (Diphoorn & van Stapele, 2021). The potential benefits of neighborhood or community crime prevention programs include decreased crime rates, increased safety and security, increased community cohesion and social capital, and increased feelings of trust and connectedness (Matsukawa & Tatsuki, 2018). Overall, the purpose of community policing is to build trust between police and citizens and create partnerships that will help prevent crime and solve neighborhood problems.
Community policing can take many different forms, but the goal is always the same: to make sure that the police are responsive to the community's needs and that the community is involved in the policing process. It is a collaborative effort between the police and the community (Pridmore et al., 2019). The community helps the police by providing information, volunteering, and participating in programs. In addition, community policing can help build trust between the police and the community (Rupp et al., 2020). When the community trusts the police, they are more likely to report crimes and cooperate with police investigations.
Problem Statement and Research Objective
Community policing is not a new concept, and it has been used successfully in many different cities. Some of the most famous examples are the NYPD's Operation Impact in New York City and COPS in Los Angeles (Skogan & Hartnett,2019). Some people resist community policing because they believe there needs to be an established partnership between the community members and police officers. Without trust, such crime prevention techniques fail. However, the intense collaboration would lead to a strong bond against crime in the neighborhood (Trebilcock & Luneke, 2019). The paper emphasizes the importance of neighborhood and community crime prevention techniques and how communities should carry them out successfully.
