Details: In 300-500 words develop a written argument and historical explanation for any of the following essential questions found in your course notes for Weeks 1-2.

In order to receive full credit for the assignment, the answer in your essay should include at least one example from each of the following sources:

-          An example from our in-class lectures and discussions. (This can be a video link shared in class or a topic explained by the instructor.)

-          An example from your assigned readings (in parenthesis list the text author and page number).

-          A topic or term covered in your course notes or embedded powerpoint links, supplemented by your own independent research. (If using an outside resource make sure to list all of your references at the bottom of your submission).

Students are welcome to choose any of the following questions to answer and explain:

  1. Describe the nature of the first contact between European and North and South American civilizations? What circumstances helped lead the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula to start on their campaign toward global conquest?
  2. What is Yali’s Question? How can these concepts be tied to questions relating to global inequities in the present day?
  3. What were the circumstances that helped give rise to Imperial dynasties in Asia, Africa, and the Indian sub-continent? What do these states have in common with one another? How do they differ?
  4. Describe the nature of the first contact between European and North and South American civilizations? What lead the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula to start on their campaign toward global conquest?
  5. Describe the history of the great Pre-Columbian civilizations of North and South America. Explain the reasons for the collapse of important civilizations in the Western Hemisphere before or after the arrival of European explorers?
  6. How did the religious, social, and political situation in England during the 1600s influence the settlement of the colonies of North America?
  7. Identify moments in the lives and careers of our founding fathers where their loyalties to Britain were first brought into question. What aspects of their experience made it so they felt revolution was necessary?
  8. George Washington famously lost more battles than he won during his campaigns in the Revolutionary War. What additional factors helped the Continental Army ultimately defeat the British and gain independence?

What is Yali's Question? How can these concepts be tied to questions relating to global inequities in the present day?
Yali's question is, "Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?" (Diamond & Ordunio, 1999, 14). In this question, Yali, a Guinean politician, interrogates why other various civilizations and races had different development cycles and periods. He is curious to determine whether the intelligence rates of various races are different and whether that is the reason Europeans were and are still advanced technologically compared to other regions. Yali is addressing the 'the strong have the way' societal setup. It is a situation that has existed since the pre-colonial and colonial periods, where the stronger societies conquered the weaker ones with the aid of technology. These technological inequalities have led to cultural deterioration and assimilation in other societies through colonization. It can also be seen in the civilization, which led to the development of steel tools and a written system, while other places used stone tools for a long time (Diamond & Ordunio, 1999).
However, Yali's is more complex than it looks and requires collaborative knowledge to answer it. Comprehensive interdisciplinary and collaborative social, economic and political knowledge would explain the global status quo. The fundamental scientific and sociology disciplines for Yali's question are genetics, history, engineering and sociology. The study of genetics helps investigate the genetic differences between whites, Asians, Africans and other races to determine whether others are genetically superior to others. It would also be crucial to study the different environments where various races reside to deduce any developmental influences which have caused global inequalities.
