1. How did early Hawaiian societal views influence the development and use of military force?
The Hawaiian society was constructed in such a way that there would be prosperity and self-sufficiency from the inside. The chiefs and the other locals coexisted mutually, whereby the resources were shared in a reciprocal manner. With the prosperity, resources as well as their geographical location however, there came the realization that they needed self-protection. This early views emanated from the ever-present threat of internal strife from the leaders within it, as well as external threat from enemies. Furthermore, the chiefs knew that the easiest way to take territory and get to power was through warfare (Dukas, 2004). The constant struggles essentially meant that the society was feudal, and warfare became part and parcel of it.
