How Blood Quantum Differs from One-drop Rule
Several approaches have been used to identify an individual into a particular ethnic, cultural, or racial group. The approaches were used to achieve various political and economic goals in the 19th and 20th centuries. According to Rodriguez-Lonebear (2021), blood quantum and the one-drop rule helped identify people in the United States. This discussion differentiates blood quantum and the one-drop rule for determining the racial and ethnic identity of individuals and groups in the United States. 
On the one hand, the one-drop rule concerns identifying a person with a Black ancestry. A person does not need black skin to identify with the Black. According to Rodriguez-Lonebear (2021), as long as someone has any “drop” of Black blood, the person belongs to the Black race, whether the phenotypical appearance is Black or not.
