Portfolio Assignment: The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation

Assume you are a nurse manager on a unit where a new nursing documentation system is to be implemented. You want to ensure that the system will be usable and acceptable for the nurses impacted. You realize a nurse leader must be on the implementation team.

To Prepare:

Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.

Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.

The Assignment: (2-3 pages not including the title and reference page)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Planning and requirements definition

Analysis

Design of the new system

Implementation

Post-implementation support

The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development
Nurses' roles and responsibilities have evolved. The complexity of the patient's needs, technologies, and emerging trends are among the reasons for the changes in their roles. The use of information technology in the healthcare system is constantly and rapidly expanding. Its integration capabilities are also vast and powerful. Technology has brought several innovations to the healthcare system, including robots to deliver various healthcare services, advanced equipment, and much more. Nurses must follow the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to develop new healthcare information technology. SDLC is a cycle that guides nursing informatics innovation's planning, analysis, design, and implementation (Wang et al., 2019). Thus, the SDLC must be used to create or improve the quality of information systems. The following sections of the paper will discuss the role of the nurses in every phase of the SDLC.
Role Description
Planning
In any situation, the planning phase is critical. This phase serves as the project's road map. As a result, during this phase, the success or failure of a project can be determined. Most importantly, if not adequately planned, it can harm the patients. Nurse informaticists must identify fundamental problems and limitations on potential solutions. They must also suggest alternative ideas and approaches assist them in achieving their goal. In addition, the nurse informaticists must present an introduction to the proposed system (Mohan, 2022). Thus, the roles and responsibilities of the nurse informaticists aforementioned are needed for the success of the planning phase. The nurses should also understand the importance of their participation in this phase. They must carefully plan the project so their efforts and resources will not be wasted.
Analysis
In the analysis phase, nurse informaticists prioritize project requirements, look for and test possible alternatives, and make recommendations for project improvement. The nurses must consider alternatives if the primary option does not work or they encounter a problem. To find possible solutions to the issues must be creative. Furthermore, they must make recommendations and provide feedback that will benefit the entire project. During this phase, nurses can think about technical tools, workflow, communication, and decision-making tools. They must succeed in this phase to avoid mistakes and failures. Nurses must think critically and creatively during this stage to develop the best ideas for the overall system. Thinking critically will also enable nurses to anticipate potential risks and mitigate or solve them before they occur (Mohan, 2022; Ochylski & Freeman, 2022). Therefore, nurses should be c...
