The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle

Research Paper Instructions:

Discussion: The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle

In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.

In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

To Prepare:

  • Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
  • Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle
Systems development life cycle (SDLC) offers an effective framework for the inclusion of nurses as frontline care providers and other healthcare professionals in developing and implementing effective information services in delivering quality and safe patient care CITATION McG221 \l 1033 (McGonigle, 2022). The SDLC procedure consists of seven phases: planning, analysis, system design, system development, customization or integration and testing, and implementation, with operations, maintenance and evaluation featuring in the last phase. Provided herein is a discussion highlighting the consequences of not involving nurses in each phase of the SDLC and the importance of their inclusion in the same in addressing the identified repercussions.
Consequences of not Involving Nurses in each Stage of SDLC and How their Inclusion Help Address the Same
The planning phase of the SDLC often involves performing an operational, economic, legal, and schedule feasibility study toward purchasing and implementing a proposed or identified health information technology system. Failure to include nurses, the frontline care providers, in the feasibility study or planning phase exposes the system to failure and inefficiencies as it will not address the nurses’ needs across their diverse healthcare settings. As frontline caregivers, nurses have first-hand experience of both the patient care and the daily operational needs to be addressed by proposed health information technology interventions. Thus their inclusion in the planning phase of the SDLC is crucial to ensuring that the proposed HIT intervention achieves the desired outcomes or purpose in delivering quality and safe patient care across the different healthcare settings.
The analysis phase of the SDLC features the evaluation of the technical requirements and functional design of the proposed HIT intervention towards assessing its compatibility with the workflow and other daily operational activities within the healthcare establishment CITATION McG222 \l 1033 (McGonigle, Achieving Excellence by Managing Workflow and Initiating Quality Projects, 2022). As the frontline caregivers and essential members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams in patient care provision, nurses have a deeper understanding of the workflow and operational activities of other healthcare staff. Hence, their inclusion in the analysis phase is crucial to ensuring positive workflow and offsetting any disruptions in discharging the daily healthcare operational activities CITATION McG221 \l 1033 (McGonigle, 2022).
The frequent interaction of nurses with patients across the different care settings also proves vital in designing the new information system through the SDLC. For instance, nurses are often involved in the col...
