Social Change as a Nurse Educator
Nurse educators play a significant role in the healthcare system. Having professional nurses with the knowledge and skills on how to communicate with other nurses and convey lifesaving knowledge is fundamental to a hospital's success (Read et al., 2016). A nurse educator can help shape processes, mitigate mistakes, identify opportunities to improve processes and alleviate risks to patients and nurses. According to Clark et al. (2017), nurse educators are influential in streamlining the future of healthcare by providing students with the technical skills needed to be successful in the nursing field and refining skills and depth of knowledge necessary to advance the quality of patient care. As a nurse educator, I will impact ten students by helping them become skilled nurses in their profession. To do so, I will provide them with technical skills that would help them be successful nurses. I will also identify teachable moments for these students.
Reynolds et al. (2020) noted that in medical practice, identifying teachable moments is an effective way to improve workplace learning. Teachable moments are entrenched in school settings, where educators identify impulsive opportunities to discover challenges and situations as they occur, with the objective of controlling learning at the pace of students (Reynolds et al., 2020). They also provide an opportunity for learning that educators can co-create through communication and reflective discussion. Identifying and using the teachable moment is critical to successful learning, especially in the clinical environment for nursing education. The teachable moment exists when the students are receptive to new understanding.
By identifying teachable moments, I will protect the self-esteem of the students and allow them to take risks for learning to take place. In turn, these ten students will have a significant impact on future students. They will help them ...
