Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies in the provision of care is essential for every healthcare professional. It allows the healthcare professional to use these technologies and improve his ability to provide patient care. In line with this, the study would focus on understanding the benefits and disadvantages of personal devices for nurses and healthcare practitioners to help device rules and regulations for its productive use.
Accordingly, the author believes that although the most appropriate method to use in this case is a quantitative method, using a mixed-method would further provide a deeper understanding of the benefits of personal devices and help provide clarity.
On the one hand, the quantitative methodology for this study would be done through the use of a Likert-type survey. Polit and Beck (2017) state that a Likert-type survey contains several “declarative statements that express a viewpoint on a topic.” One of the benefits of this kind of survey is its capability to elicit the opinions of the respondents in a measurable form, thereby balancing their subjective point of view and the objectiveness required by a quantitative study (Kreitchmann et al., 2019). Thus, considering that the measurement regarding the use of personal devices is based on the personal opinions of the respondents, then a Likert-type questionnaire should fit as the survey method.
On the other hand, the qualitative method would only use a small sample of the total number of respondents employed in the quantitative portion. Notably, the qualitative approach would only be used to enhance the content validity of the initial quantitative method used (Hong et al., 2019). Notably, this can be done through follow-up probing questions that would elicit the underlying reasons for a respondent’s answers to the surveys.
All in all, it is clear that the mixed method would be used to find a comprehensive analysis of the perceived advantages of the use of personal devices for healthcare professionals.
