Introduction
Workforce management is a critical component of every organization's productivity. The amount of efficiency and effectiveness in carrying out any specific jobs is determined by the number of personnel employed and their level of competence. Work overload is one of the most serious human resource concerns that many healthcare organizations encounter. It's a problem that has an impact on healthcare staff's motivation and ability to provide high-quality care to patients. Work overload, particularly among nurses is a problem caused by a variety of variables, including an increase in the number of patients requiring healthcare services, poor human resource planning, and organizational restructuring, to name a few. As a result, this study will compare two qualitative research articles that deal with the issue of work overload in nursing.
Background of Study
Work overload in nursing, as mentioned in the previous section, is a problem that impacts nurses' motivation as well as the quality of services they provide. The two qualitative research studies listed below were used to provide relevant and useful literature for this research work. Below is a synopsis of the two articles examined.
van Oostveen, C. J., Mathijssen, E., & Vermeulen, H. (2015). Nurse staffing issues are just the tip of the iceberg: A qualitative study about nurses’ perceptions of nurse staffing. International journal of nursing studies, 52(8), 1300-1309.
The publication by Van Oostveen, Mathijssen, and Vermeulen (2015) was the first to be reviewed. The article discussed the shifting landscape in healthcare, where there has been an increase in nursing demands, owing to the apparent rise in the number of elderly patients and the industry's complexities. The report also highlighted that despite the drastic changes in healthcare, the number of practitioners remains critically low, which can have an influence on the quality of care delivered to patients in the long run. In regards to the nursing field, the article was significant because it allowed for a more in-depth examination of work overload, with factors other than staffing being addressed as causes of increased nurse workload. Some identified elements that contributed to nursing job overload included aspects of leadership. The primary goal of the first paper by Van Oostveen, Mathijssen and Vermeulen, (2015) was "to obtain in-depth insight into the perceptions of nurses in the Netherlands regarding current nurse staffing levels and use of nurse-to-patient ratios (NPR) and patient classification systems (PCS.”
Jensen, A. S. B., & Sørensen, D. (2017). Nurses’ experiences of working in organizations undergoing restructuring: A metasynthesis of qualitative research studies. International journal of nursing studies, 66, 7-14.
Jensen and Sorenson were the authors of the second article to be reviewed. This article discusses how the restructuring of healthcare institutions affects the workload and productivity of nurses. According to the study, nurses often percei...
