Health Care Privacy and Security
Health care practitioners worldwide are mandated to provide quality care to their patients without discrimination or favoritism. Similarly, health care facilities are supposed to ensure they employ medical workers and professionals with relevant skills and qualifications to ensure patient outcomes are improved significantly. On this breadth, doctors and nurses need to ensure that they safeguard all records containing patient information. They are obligated to ensure that they don't divulge patient data with 3rd parties or unscrupulous individuals who will use the information for malicious purposes. Various legislations have been formulated and enacted in that regard, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. These legislations come in the backdrop of statistics that point to over 18 million Americans annually have their health information breached electronically. Some various issues and factors jeopardize health care privacy, such as lack of patient control, legislative gaps and lack of trust. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act in 2009 (HITECH) encourages healthcare providers to adopt electronic health records.
Nonetheless, despite the benefits of electronic medical records, the initiative is prone to hacking, which exposes confidential patient information. Hackers usually gain access to hospital databases to acquire sensitive patient data ranging from credit card and insurance details. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2014 warned hospitals in the U.S. of hacking threats during a coordinated ransom attack (Harvey & Harvey, 2014). The FBI shared they believed attackers were using Trickbot malware for financial gains and had at least affected over 400 hospitals in and around the U.S. Some of the gravely impacted hospitals included Sonoma Valley Hospital in California and the St. Lawrence Health System located in New York (Harvey & Harvey, 2014). These hospitals saw confidential health care information relating to a substantial number of their patients fall to unscrupulous sources.
The second issue affecting health care privacy is legislation gaps. Several policies and acts have been formulated and enacted to safeguard protected health information (PHI). These include Federal legislation like HIPAA. The ...
