The underlying principles behind a curriculum program's Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Philosophy are essential for its success. By having a deeper understanding of how it relates to the overall goals of an institution, it becomes possible to develop a clear insight into how to improve its goals further. In one study done by Slate et al. (2008), the authors noted that mission statements have a significant influence on the capacity of an institution, with high-performing schools emphasizing more on "themes of Academic Success, Challenge, Citizenship, Empower, Partnership, and Social Development" as compared to non-performing or low-performing institutions. This important is the reason behind the institution's vision statement, mission statement, and philosophy covered in this analysis.
Mission Statement
Upon analysis of the institution's mission statement, it is clear that despite its relative advantage, there are various improvements that must be made to improve its viability as a nursing program.
On the one hand, the mission statement is comprehensive enough to cover the academic, practical, and professional milestones the program hopes to achieve. Studies found that a comprehensive mission statement is necessary for the competitiveness of a curriculum, especially in this evolving educational environment (Spillane, 2019). In another set of studies done by Tri et al. (2021), the authors also found out that the mission statements of a curriculum must encompass the necessary goals and outputs for the team without reducing the flexibility for reaching these objectives. In line with this, the author of this article believes that one of the strengths of the mission statement for this curriculum is its balance between comprehensiveness and flexibility, which seeks to be an anchor point that would guide the student nurses' development without hindering their creativity and ability from adapting to the realities of the healthcare profession.
On the other hand, the author also believes that this mission statement has room for improvement. Despite its comprehensiveness and flexibility, mission statements would be adequate by introducing specific guiding principles such as academic success, partnership, and social development and responsibility, to name a few (Slate et al., 2008).
