Jia, Y., Gao, J., Dai, J., Zheng, P., & Fu, H. (2017). Associations between health culture, health behaviors, and health-related outcomes: A cross-sectional study. PLOS ONE, 12(7), e0178644. https://doi(dot)org/10.1371/journal.pone.0178644.
This source is important to my primary area of study because it explores the relationships between health behaviors, demographic characteristics, workplace health culture, and health-related outcomes. The cross-sectional study illustrates how individual health culture is tied to healthy and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, physical activity, working overtime, and drinking, and how this in turn, are associated with health-related outcomes. More importantly, the source illustrates why fostering a health culture requires consideration of target population’s lifestyle, individual health culture, the health effects of direct leaders, as well as the health culture at the workplace.

Macnamara, J. (2021). New insights into crisis communication from an “inside” emic perspective during COVID-19. Public Relations Inquiry, 10(2), 237–262. https://doi.org/10.1177/2046147x21999972
The study by Macnamara (2021) investigated crisis communication in an organization encumbered by the crises caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, including, significant financial losses, disruption, and staff redundancies. Using the situational crisis communication theory (SCCT) as the analysis framework, the author explored how organizations facing operations and income losses communicated the same to stakeholders (Macnamara, 2021). On the whole, the “research sought in an open-ended way to identify () the major challenges in dealing with the crisis; (2) the key strategic decision and actions taken including their rationale; (3) the response and outcomes of those decisions and actions as far as could be determined; and (4) to compare these with crisis management and crisis communication theory” (Macnamara, 2021). The study employed the qualitative research design where data was collected through direct personal observation and journal notes as well as diaries. Ethnography and auto-ethnography were also operationalized using other organizational records that supported direct personal observation, including company reports, meetings, e-mails, websites and intranet statistics, and surveys (Macnamara, 2021).
The study population constituted of university faculty where respondents took part in online meetings where discussions revolved around the four aims of the research paper. Study participants also kept a detailed diary together with comprehensive journal notes of all pronouncements, reactions, and guidelines provided by their leadership teams, thereby, providing extensive data on organizational actions, assessments, and communications, together with feedback from primary stakeholders (Macnamara, 2021). The inductive research approach was employed where data relevant to the topic of interest was first collected before any tentative hypotheses could be drawn. The study determined that the SCCT analysis framework did not account for organizational failure resulting from unintentional crises, particularly those crises resulting from external forces and outside the control of the firm. Emergent strategic communication was identified as a useful communication strategy in serving the interests of stakeholders and organizations, over and above, furthering social purpose (Macnamara, 2021). Although news media and social media are the primary communication channels in a crisis, the author identified authenticity, screen fatigue, and limited levels of digital competency as serious challenges faced by public relation and corporate communication practitioners (Macnamara, 2021). On the whole, the study revealed that interdisplinary amalgamation of public relations theory of crisis and risk communication is necessary to engage meaningfully with organizational stakeholders and drive social purpose.
The disciplines that are represented in the study are sociology, ma...
