What are Herpes?
Herpes is a disease caused by a virus called herpes simplex (Herpes, 2003). The type of infections depends on the part of body it infects. Oral herpes shows on the face or mouth and it forms cold sores or blisters. Genital herpes is an ailment that affects the genitals, buttocks and the anal area through sexual transmission. Some other forms of herpes affects parts of the body including the eyes, or skin. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is in two types HSV type 1 or HSV type 2. HSV type 1 is a cause of cold stores and genital sores and HSV type 2 causes’ genital herpes and can infect the mouth. Oral herpes or cold sores are tiny, sores filled with fluid that shows on nose, lips, cheek, mouth, fingers, throat, or chin. This is common and an estimate of 80% in U.S has had exposure to the HSV type1 (Herpes, 2003). To understand about herpes, it is necessary to look at its signs and symptoms, diagnosis and ways to prevent it.
Signs and Symptoms of Herpes Simplex
People might not be aware of an infection of Herpes Simplex Virus. This is because they may not have signs or they are mild. In genital herpes, the symptoms include sores, itching; blisters with white or red bumps appear after a few days. The blisters rupture and blood ooze from the ulcer and scabs that appear when the wound heals. Urinating is painful because of the wounds and sores around the genitals and tenderness are problems of HSV (Green, 2007). During the early stage, there is swelling of the lymph in the groin, aches of the head, muscles, and fever. It spreads by touching the area where there is infection and rubbing it on an uninfected area.
Women and men develop wounds on the buttocks, anus and mouth. Women develop sores around the vaginal area, exterior of the genitals and cervix Men have sores on their penis, scrotum, thighs and urethra. Signs and symptom can recur and genital herpes is different for every individual. The outbreak is less severe for each passing time. During the period of recurrence, there is burning, tickly and itching where it first appeared on the body. The lower legs, back and buttocks experience pain.
Recurrence is less sore than the first attack. Herpes keratitis or herpes of the eye has symptoms of pain, sensitivity to light, discharge, feelings of grittiness in the eye and can affect both eyes this requires immediate treatment can cause the eye to have scars (Green, 2007). HSV can be dormant but recurs if there is stress, during menstruation, having fever or sunburn. The duration of Oral herpes takes two to three weeks while the initial outbreak for Genital herpes is two to six weeks.
