The nursing profession faces several problems, and extended shifts are one of them. The global standard shift for nurses is twelve hours for three days a week or eight hours for five days a week (Gaines, 2021). The days can be consecutive or with certain intervals depending on the arrangement agreed upon by the organization. Despite these seemingly friendly shift hours, most nurses work longer, compromising the quality of their services, which can be detrimental to a larger human population. Nurses make up the majority of healthcare providers. The prevailing nurse doctor ratio in most cases is 3:1. A situation where these nurses serve long shifts means they are likely to make clinical errors affecting healthcare quality.
