Modern adolescents are faced with issues that if not properly monitored and handled, may lead to dangerous social interactions like a school shooting by a teenager. Teenagers feel more observed, misunderstood and alone as a result of bullying, sexual pressures, peer pressure, internet trolls and eating disorders. Adolescent struggles have been amplified by technology and the most affected has been cyber bullying.
Cyber bullying is defined as the systematic targeting and aggression using digital technologies. It’s represents a willful intention to cause harm using harassment, embarrassment, threats and humiliation. This problem is exaggerated by external factors such as; problems at home, bodily changes and unrealistic expectations. All these factors make the victim feel trapped and they retreat to their shell where they feel safe.
The effects of cyber bullying on an adolescent varies with an individual. It can be manifested in physical illness or in deteriorating mental health. They may also experience loneliness, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. Some teenagers may exude signs of being unhappy by cases of delinquency and substance abuse CITATION Rob12 \l 1033 (Robin M Kowalski, Susan P Limber, Patricia W Agatston, 2012). It should be noted that a teenager’s mind is not equipped with coping mechanisms for stress at such an early age and it’s upon the adults to identify signs of bullying and offer guidance.
