The proliferation of personal communication devices, from smartphones to tablet computers, has resulted in their ubiquitous use among registered nurses caring for patients. Nurses now use their digital devices for personal and professional purposes, including sending private text messages and emails, online shopping, checking social networking sites, communicating with other clinicians on matters about work, and even playing online games. Given the prevalence of personal communication devices in healthcare settings, it is necessary to investigate the benefits and challenges of using them as they relate to patient care. A cursory examination of current literature indicates that there are certain advantages and disadvantages of personal communication device utilization by nurses in clinical settings. For instance, using personal communication devices in clinical settings streamlines communication, sustains evidence-based practice, reduces work stress levels, and enhances nursing practices.
